Trade show booth supplies that elevate engagement: Counters, kiosks, lighting, and canopies

When you’re preparing for a trade show, it’s natural to focus on the big things first: your backwall, your graphics, your flooring. And you should! Those are the anchors of your booth. But here’s something I’ve learned over years of helping exhibitors bring their spaces to life: the details matter just as much. The right trade show booth supplies and accessories quietly shape how visitors move, what they notice, and how long they stick around.

Accessories aren’t “extras.” They’re the tools that help you guide conversations, simplify interactions, and create the kind of experience people remember. If you’re getting ready for your next show and want to make the most of your booth – whether it’s a 10x10 or a large island – here are some of the essentials I encourage every exhibitor to consider.

1. Counters: Your command center for conversations

Counters do a lot of behind-the-scenes work. They’re where greetings happen, where collateral lives, where demos kick off, and where attendees instinctively pause. A well-designed counter instantly communicates professionalism and gives your team a place to operate confidently. If you’re exploring options, you can browse our full lineup of trade show counters here

Types of counters:
  • Portable counters – Lightweight, easy to set up, and ideal for programs with frequent travel
  • Modular counters – More substantial and customizable, great for creating a polished, branded front-of-booth presence
  • Case-to-counter conversions – Great for budget-conscious exhibitors. The shipping case turns into the counter itself, eliminating the need for a separate piece.
  • Storage-integrated counters – Perfect for hiding personal items, giveaways, chargers, cleaning wipes – anything you don’t want in view.
Pro tips for counters:
  • Place counters near the booth entrance. This encourages natural interaction without making your space feel blocked off.
  • Choose counters with hidden storage. You’ll thank yourself when the show gets busy.
  • Add subtle branding or LED accents. These small touches make your booth feel intentional and polished.

2. Kiosks, monitor mounts & tablet stands: Powering digital interaction

If you use digital content (and most exhibitors do), kiosks become one of your most powerful engagement tools. They give visitors a low-pressure way to learn about your product, especially when your staff is tied up. You can explore our kiosks and monitor stand options here.

Types of kiosks and stands:
  • Freestanding kiosks – Ideal for product browsing, videos, and demos.
  • Monitor mounts – Great for looping highlight reels or animated brand content.
  • Tablet stands – A go-to solution for lead capture, survey forms, and scan-to-learn experiences.
Pro tips for kiosks and stands:
  • Plan for power early. You don’t want cords running across the floor or last-minute rewiring.
  • Place kiosks in high-traffic zones. Corners and aisle-facing angles work best.
  • Use branded digital content. Motion and color help people stay engaged longer.

3. Lighting: Setting the mood and drawing the eye

Lighting is one of the most effective ways to elevate your booth, and one of the most overlooked. Good lighting adds warmth, defines your space, and makes your products look their best. If you want inspiration, you can explore real examples of how brands use lighting in our displays here.

Types of lighting:
  • Spotlights – Highlight products or signage.
  • LED strip lighting – Perfect for adding glow to counters, shelves, or frames.
  • Backlighting – Creates drama and sophistication, especially behind graphics.
  • Overhead fixtures – Fill your space evenly with clean, bright light.
Pro tips for lighting:
  • Showcase your hero product. A focused beam can draw attention from across the aisle.
  • Choose LEDs. Lower heat, lower cost, and longer-lasting.
  • Ask about easy-install options. Some lighting solutions snap into modular frames and don’t require an on-site electrician.

4. Canopies: Defining your space with height and style

Canopies are one of my favorite ways to add dimension to a booth. They create height, break up open spaces, and add a layer of architectural structure that instantly makes your display feel more custom.

Canopy options:
  • Available in a wide range of shapes and sizes
  • Can be used over graphics, lightboxes, or demo areas
  • Can incorporate graphics or lighting for extra impact
Pro tips for canopies:
  • Use canopies to define zones. A demo area, a meeting nook, or a product feature space.
  • Add lighting or branding. It draws the eye upward and reinforces your identity.
  • Know your venue rules. Double-check height limitations as they can vary widely.

Next: More trade show booth supplies that increase engagement

Counters, kiosks, lighting and canopies help set the tone for your exhibit and maximize your space. They’re some of the best investments you can make to improve engagement without dramatically increasing your budget.

If you’re ready to explore the next layer of high-impact trade show booth supplies, including shelving, placards, and literature displays, you can continue to Part 2 here. These supporting display elements may seem small, but they play a critical role in trade show engagement by improving organization, reinforcing messaging, and making it easier for attendees to interact with your space.
